After an ageless red of real body and power? Blue Pyrenees is the pick, and especially this structured, dense and utterly classic wine.
Fully deserving of its gold medal and high scores, this shows the sturdy structure that Blue Pyrenees is famous for.
Anyone keen to cellar a wine for thirty years or more should look no further than this classic blend of Cabernet Shiraz and Merlot.
Expert Reviews
83% cabernet sauvignon, 12% malbec, 5% merlot. This is a delight - and a surprise. Instead of the usually slightly bony/hard mouthfeel of most of the Blue Pyrenees red wines, this is luscious and round, cassis, redcurrant and plum all intersecting, pliable tannins doing nothing to diminish the pleasure.'
Blend of cabernet sauvignon (83%), merlot (5%) and malbec (12%), with no shiraz to be seen. All French oak. Volume of fruit and tannin. This is a hefty red but a smooth one. Blackcurrant, bay, smoked cedarwood and ripe redcurrant flavours. It's a structural red but it's packed with ample fruit.'
Deepish red/purple, youthful colour, with a walnutty and slightly pine-resiny nose, which seems fairly forward and oak-driven. The palate is raw and sharp with shrill acidity and pointy tannins, the palate profile lean and long and sinewy. It has richness and weight, and could repay some cellaring. It would undoubtedly go best with protein.'

How's it taste?
Still very youthful with gorgeous blackberry varietal fruit intensity and vibrancy dominating the nose and the palate and is well balanced by the oak.
How was it made?
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot, matured in 40% new oak barrels for a full 24 months.
Who made it?
Blue Pyrenees Estate, (formerly the Chateau Remy), was founded by Remy Martin in 1963. Passionate about discovering the potential for sparkling wine in cool climate conditions, the presence of Remy Martin in Australia paved the way for the likes of Champagne Houses Moet and Chandon as well as Louis Roederer to purchase vineyards and produce wine in Australia. Set amidst the idyllic blue-hued Pyrenees range in Western Victoria, the estate was later purchased in 2002 by Chris Smales and Andrew Koerner along with a small group of Sydney businessmen who continue to craft subtle and thought provoking styles from Pyrenees fruit. True to their origins, they are still producing beautiful sparkling wines too. A happy medium between ample sunshine and cool southern ocean winds ensures Blue Pyrenees grapes ripen at moderate temperatures, yielding vibrant fruit flavours. Various soil types are found at the Estate including brown sandy loam, gravel beds, rocky quartz, sandstone and clay. This diverse range ensures a dynamic range of wines with distinct flavour profiles. The Blue Pyrenees range includes Sparkling, Varietal and Reserve ranges as well as the Richardson and Museum series.
