While Hamelin Bay have a rather low profile, here's a winery producing rather tasty traditional Margaret River wines.

This Cabernet Merlot is a ripe and chunky style with punchy flavours and lots of 'em. Cedar, dark berries and more dark berries is the focus here, with light tannins and a long finish.

In other words, here is a chunky Margaret River red, from a great vintage, made by an underrated winery (and at a great price).

Expert Reviews

93 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionThere’s a lot happening here, mocha notes on one side, savoury/earthy olive on the other, dark berry fruits occupying the middle ground.

How's it taste?

A deep red centre surrounded by a bright red rim. Lifted aromas of red fruits, raspberry and cherry aromas, with underlying cigar box and plum jam characters. A refined and elegant wine. This Cabernet Merlot has restraint and brooding power with a succulent mid-palate. The finish is dry with fine dry emery tannins.

How was it made?

68% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 3% malbec, estate-grown, destemmed, fermented with cultured yeast, matured for 12 months in French barriques (16% new).

Who made it?

Hamelin Bay Wines is a family-run vineyard and cellar door located in Karridale, at the northern end of Margaret River. First established by the Drake-Brockman family in 1992, the core of the business though is the 26ha Five Ashes vineyard, which is said to be one of Margaret River’s most picturesque vineyards. With a moderate maritime climate and a north-facing ridge of prime gravelly loam soils, the vineyard is ideally situated for premium quality grape growing. Of note, the vineyard is setup with varieties on different spots according to style. The whites sit on a cool easterly slope, with soils varying from prized Forest Grove gravels to Karri loams. The reds are situated on a warmer north-facing slope beneath the cellar door on deep, dark gravel loams. Stylistically, the whites are built on elegance, while the reds are built on delivering medium-bodied and contained power.
