2013 Yarraloch Stephanie's Dream Pinot Noir

2013 Yarraloch Stephanie's Dream Pinot Noir

Recommendations

Yarraloch is investment banker Stephen's labour of love, with three different vineyards planted 70kms apart.
He then has the wines made by Dave Bicknell at Oakridge (with help from a few other super Yarra makers too).

This Pinot is savoury and earthy style with fleshy red and floral fruits providing exceptional complexity.

Expert Reviews

97 Points - Campbell Mattinson - Halliday's Wine Companion80% whole bunch. 150 dozen. An outstanding wine in all respects. Ripped with herbs, awash with wood smoke, plush with fruit and undergrowth and strung with tannin. Everything is firm, purposeful, dripping with character. There's a velvety aspect to the texture, for good measure. This is what it's all about.'
97 Points - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontIt's always a joy when a wine like this arrives on the tasting bench. 150 dozen made. 80% whole bunch. It's smoky. It's herbal. It's strewn with leaves and spices, like a wine windswept, like a savoury storm. It's cherried at heart, of course, sour-cherried, almost cranberried, with streaks of bitterness and spots of stalk, all strung out, all pulling on the wine, all building tension, like points of drama, like it's plotting to mesmerise you. It succeeded. I sat, at the desk, at work, enthralled. This is a wine.'

How's it taste?

Spicy mature Pinot Noir notes with hints of herbs and tomato leaf, the palate rippling with dark meaty fruit and long tannins to finish.

How was it made?

80% whole bunches,

Who made it?

Unashamedly inspired by the great wines of Europe, the singular focus of YarraLoch is to create world class wines from the Yarra Valley which are distinguished by their elegance, balance and complexity. With only six hectares of vines but scattered across three entirely different sites 70km apart, owner Stephen Wood has found the best site for each of the varieties he is focusing on. Pinot Noir is planted on the Steep Hill vineyard, with a northeast orientation, and a shaley rock and ironstone soil. Cabernet Sauvignon at Kangaroo Ground, with a dry, steep northwest-facing site and abundant sun exposure in the warmest part of the day, ensuring full ripeness, while Chardonnay, Shiraz Merlot and Viognier are planted at the Upper Plenty vineyard, 50km from Kangaroo Ground. This has an average temperature 2C cooler and a ripening period 2-3 weeks later than the warmest parts of the Yarra Valley.
