Ara's patchwork of vineyards has long promised to deliver seriously good Pinot Noir, and this Marlborough red absolutely nails it.
Like many of the region's best wines, this has a lovely red fruit vibrancy to it. Marlborough sunshine writ large. Then a palate that is round and full, but not heavy. It's so much of what Pinot should be all about, and very well priced too.

Delightfully fruited and elegantly fragrant, the wine shows dark cherry, ripe strawberry, smoked game and nutmeg characters with subtle dried herb complexity. The palate delivers juicy fruit flavours and fleshy mouthfeel, beautifully supported by fine texture and gentle tannins. At its best: now to 2022.

How's it taste?
This Pinot Noir shows complex bright red fruits and deep mocha spice burst from the glass. On the palate, the tannins are fine and slightly grippy, with a rich mid palate.
How was it made?
This Single Estate Pinot Noir has been crafted from low-yielding vines from our site in the Southern Valleys of Marlborough. Fruit was hand harvested in four separate lots, picked at optimum ripeness. Ferment was 12 to 16 days, peaking at 28°C, before all the juice was pressed into French oak, of which 25% was new. Malolactic fermentation occurred over the winter, with the wine being pulled off lees in March. From there it was lightly filtered to preserve its pretty, delicate fruit and its tannin integrity before bottling.
Who made it?
As if New Zealand wasn’t already on the edge of the earth, wait until you’ve made the journey to Wairau Valley, Marlborough. At 41.51S 174.01E, Ara Wines are literally on the edge of the world. Wedged between rugged mountains on both sides and with two icy rivers cutting a track through, it’s an extreme place. This valley is the definition of raw, untamed, cool climate. To say this presents challenges is an understatement. But digging deep and working in harmony with the environment builds strong character – and strong character makes great wines. In fact, the winemaking and viticulture teams at Ara Wines wouldn’t have it any other way. They live to embrace challenge – creating intensely flavoured wines that amplify Marlborough’s remarkable natural story. These strikingly different, complex wines illustrate their ‘Ara’ or path on the edge of the world.
