It's rare to get access to a beautifully mature Yarra Pinot Noir, especially with such rampant recent Pinot demand. But here we are, with a wonderfully savoury wine from Yarraloch.
Actually, the whole Yarraloch story is a good one - investment banker Stephen Wood caught the wine bug and decided to devote every waking hour to delivering great Yarra wines, working vineyards 70km apart and utilising the skills of megastar contract winemakers like Dave Bicknell of Oakridge to deliver very fine wines.

This complex and super serious Pinot is a great example of what such persistence can deliver.

Expert Reviews

94 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine Companion100% whole bunch MV6, wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel tanks, 27 days on skins, maturation in French oak (33% new), and of course, vintage, are the points of difference. When the '15 vintage is released, it should be a knockout.
93 Points - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontIt's both complex and easy-going at once. Twig and dried herb notes keep things interesting but the core of cherry-plum fruit is the main game in town.

How's it taste?

Autumnal style of wine, with a light fragrant nose of dried berries, garrigue, charred leaves, vanilla and rhubarb compote and rose. The palate is effortless, with a silken textural mouthfeel and underlying freshness and acidity.

Who made it?

Unashamedly inspired by the great wines of Europe, the singular focus of YarraLoch is to create world class wines from the Yarra Valley which are distinguished by their elegance, balance and complexity. With only six hectares of vines but scattered across three entirely different sites 70km apart, owner Stephen Wood has found the best site for each of the varieties he is focusing on. Pinot Noir is planted on the Steep Hill vineyard, with a northeast orientation, and a shaley rock and ironstone soil. Cabernet Sauvignon at Kangaroo Ground, with a dry, steep northwest-facing site and abundant sun exposure in the warmest part of the day, ensuring full ripeness, while Chardonnay, Shiraz Merlot and Viognier are planted at the Upper Plenty vineyard, 50km from Kangaroo Ground. This has an average temperature 2C cooler and a ripening period 2-3 weeks later than the warmest parts of the Yarra Valley.
