Domain Road isn't the first name that people reach for when it comes to Central Otago Pinot, but you should know this name. Sharing a border with Felton Road, Domaine Road has a prime position in Central Otago and is producing such promising wine.

This dark and quite dense Central Otago Pinot is a fine example of the estate's style - a proudly chunky Pinot but with refinement too.

Expert Reviews

94 Points - Cameron Douglas MSThere's no mistaking the bouquet and origin of this wine - with savoury wild thyme and dried herb scents leading to aromas of oak, dark cherry and dried raspberry. On the palate - dry, textured, tense, fruity and firm
WinestateDeep ruby with a fragrant savoury bouquet, it is full-bodied and sweet-fruited, with youthful cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity and length

How's it taste?

Lifted aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and violets, with a hint of spice and vanilla. The palate has rich dark fruits at the front with black plum, ripe blackberry and vanilla at the finish with a hint of chocolate and spice. A complex, concentrated wine with ample fine tannins and a long finish.

How was it made?

For almost 100 years fruit was grown on the Domain Road site, peaches, pears and apples originally and then Apricots at a later stage. It has been said that if you can grow Apricots then you can also grow great Pinot Noir and this has certainly been the case at Domain Road. Our second vineyard, Defiance on Felton Road is considered to be one of the prime sites in this well known location. Our Pinot Noir vines from these two sites deliver a complexity that reflect the unique location of the vineyards. Harvested between 29th March and 13th April 2016, the fruit was predominantly de-stemmed (4% was whole bunch pressed) into tanks for fermentation before being transferred to French oak barriques (27% new) to age for ten months. With dark purple hues, this wine is wonderfully complex. Fragrant aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and violets, with a hint of spice and vanilla, are complemented by rich dark fruit, black plum and ripe blackberry, on the palate. A complex, concentrated wine with ample fine tannins and a hint of chocolate and spice in its tantalisingly long finish.

Who made it?

Domain Road Vineyard, owned by Graeme and Gillian Crosbie, specialises in award-winning cool climate wines. From grapes grown in the heart of Central Otago wine country, they produce Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir Rosé, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris wines. Dedication to excellence combined with a traditional approach means Domain Road Vineyard's wines are now nationally and internationally recognised. The grapes grow on the upper Bannockburn terraces, above the Kawarau River. The vineyards are in a high altitude setting, surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges. The challenging terroir produces wines of structure and elegance, with pure, intense flavours.
