2018 De Bortoli Regional Reserve Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2018

2018 De Bortoli Regional Reserve Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2018

Recommendations

Here's a rare wine - a premium Yarra Valley Pinot Noir that De Bortoli normally only sell in restaurants, but we've nabbed some just for you!

This 2018 De Bortoli Regional Reserve Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from vineyards across the Yarra Valley - including Tarrawarra, Coldstream and DIxons Creek, with a portion of whole bunches used in the blend and minimal handing. In other words, it's premium Yarra Pinot made with no expense spared.

Our wine panel liked this so much that it ended up with 94 points when it passed a little while back, and for good reason - it's a $30 Pinot in quality and style. Yet you won't pay anywhere near that amount!

The only challenge? You won't find this anywhere else, and with strictly limited stocks, you're not going to find it again either...

How's it taste?

Bright cherry and crunchy, red berry aromas lift out of the glass, with an undercurrent of spice. The palate is juicy and easy-drinking with a clean and flavourful finish. Recommended.

How was it made?

Fruit for this blend is grown mainly in Dixons Creek, Tarrawarra and Coldstream. The grapes are both hand and machine harvested with a percentage of the hand harvested used for whole bunch inclusion. A combination of winemaking techniques are used to produce a final blend with complexity and balance. These include cold maceration prior to fermentation, inclusion of whole bunches and warm fermentation at 30˚C to 32˚C. Minimal handling and filtration is adopted to preserve fruit flavour.

Who made it?

One of Australia's more dynamic family wine businesses, De Bortoli wines is now in it's third generation, having been first established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928 with the business then driven by their son Deen De Bortoli and now third generation Darren De Bortoli alongside his sister Leanne and her husband, De Bortoli Chief Winemaker Steve Webber. De Bortoli wines has been historically based at Bilbul (near Griffith) in the NSW Riverina, but more recently they have expanded into the Yarra Valley (where Leanne and Steve Webber are based), the Hunter Valley and also into Victoria's King Valley. The emphasis in all of the vineyards has always been upon innovation, with De Bortoli credited with the creation of Australia's most famous dessert wine, the Noble One. The De Bortoli winemaking philosophy is that great wine begins in the vineyard. Their belief is that sustainable vineyard practices will deliver exceptional fruit quality to the winery as well as real environmental benefits. With a focus on careful site selection, vine maturity, high input viticulture and a move towards biological farming principles, De Bortoli Wines are also focusing more and more on single vineyard wines and the expression of specific terroir through their wine.
