2017 Yangarra Old Vine McLaren Vale Grenache

2017 Yangarra Old Vine McLaren Vale Grenache

Recommendations

To think that you can pick up an epic old vine Grenache, from one of the country's best producers, for under $50? It defies belief that such a stunning is available for a comparatively low price, but such is life for Grenache.

Needless to say this is beautifully expressive, high tones and frankly delicious Grenache at a great price.

Expert Reviews

97 Points - James Halliday - Top 100 WinesPlanted in 1946 on a sand dune in the cooler, elevated northeast of McLaren Vale. Hand-picked and sorted in the winery, the fermentation is wild. It is a glorious example of grenache picked earlier than in the past, retaining all the freshness of red cherries/berries, spices starting to build, tannins beautifully shaped.'
93 Points - James SucklingA very succinct and smoothly delivered style that has a wealth of blueberries and raspberries and a crisp, forthright frame of tannin that speaks to the old vines and the superior site at work here. Bold finish.

How's it taste?

Produced exclusively from our Estate bush vines planted in 1946, high on our Estate’s deep sandy soils. Our Old Vine Grenache is complex, perfumed and elegant with a trademark tannin structure.

How was it made?

The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed and mechanically sorted. 50% whole berries. The berries were then tipped in to open fermenters, cold-soaked for 5-6 days and underwent wild yeast fermentation. No pressings were used. The wine in barrel was kept on lees in older French oak for 10 months. Not fined. Certified Organic/Biodynamic.

Who made it?

The Yangarra philosophy centers around producing wines solely from our single-vineyard estate, where our bush-vine Grenache is the keystone variety. With our feet firm in history, and our eyes on the horizon, Yangarra Estate now exists to deliver the essence of this beautiful place to your glass. McLaren Vale folks like to think that their region on the Gulf St Vincent, patron of viticulturers, has “the best Mediterranean climate on Earth.” With this foremost in mind, Yangarra Estate is devoted solely to producing wines from the best grape varieties of the southern Rhone, which lies on the north-west Mediterranean coast. Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in these moderate maritime environments. Our respect of this special piece of country is evident in the wines we make from its grapes - every Yangarra Estate wine is a confident reflection of the nature of this land.
