Here's a great Grenache blend from one of the Barossa's finest winemakers.

Made by the famous Kalleske family, who've been growing grapes in the Barossa since the 1850s, this is the sister wine to 93 point Jack Shiraz. Recently the Kalleske family approached us with a fantastic parcel of Grenache fruit and the 2017 Nietschke Harry Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre was born!

Harry is a beautifully balanced GSM. There is this spice and perfume, yet also powerful ripe fruit and supple tannins. If you love juicy, yet medium bodied, Barossa Grenache you'll love this.

Expert Reviews

94 Points - Sam Kim - Wine OrbitWonderfully ripe and fragrant, the wine shows dark cherry, plum, vanilla, toasted nut and subtle game characters on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent mid palate weight and fleshy mouthfeel, finishing persistent and silky. Flavoursome and soothingly delicious. At its best: now to 2023.

How's it taste?

Nietschke 2017 Harry GSM is deep purple-red in colour. Ripe red fruits dominate on the aroma. There is also blueberries, flowers, clove spice, musk and a hint of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of fresh fruits. The juicy Grenache is perfectly framed with rich Shiraz and chewy Mataro. There are dominant flavours of red licorice, spiced plum and a hint of jam. It is extremely plush with super fine tannins adding a beautiful structure.

How was it made?

Nietschke Harry GSM utilises select Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro blocks across the North Western Barossa, including many old vines, to make this classic Barossa blend. Soil is shallow, sandy loam over superb deep red clay. Winemaking The Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro grapes were harvested in numerous lots from mid March to late April. Following fermentation for 7 to 10 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for a year. Only seasoned French and American barrels were used to preserve the bright fruit characters. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Who made it?

The Kalleske family have been growing grapes in the Barossa Valley since 1853 – they are known as one of the premier viticulture families in Australia, with seventh generation family members still active in the industry today. Situated near the village of Greenock in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Kalleske occupies organic vineyard sites, growing premium fruit for their boutique range. The vineyards vary in age with oldest dating back to 1875 and the youngest being around 50 years old. Traditional winemaking techniques with biodynamically managed vineyards characterises the winemaking process. Winemaker Troy Kalleske focuses on expressing the unique characteristics of each individual vineyard site throught the range of Kalleske wines.
