It's such a pleasure to see the revival in Grenache's fortunes in recent years. Such an excellent grape, and McLaren Vale, in particular, has excellent resources in the ground.
Willunga 100 has long championed Grenache, and it shows with the magic of this red. Red fruit, understated oak, fine sandpaper tannins, it's an attractive red with real immediacy - ie you want to drink it immediately!

Made from 93-year-old, dry-grown bush vines, this is a stunning grenache; the perfumed bouquet shows raspberry coulis, dark plum, toasted hazelnut, game and floral characters. The palate is equally gratifying with pristine fruit flavours and rounded mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by velvety texture and fine tannins. Flavoursome, generous and delectable. At its best: now to 2026.
There is great effort at this estate-palpably evident across the range as taut, chalky tannins and an edge of briar-to rein in the excessive exuberance and alcoholic tendencies of certain varieties when left to hang too late, or when managed poorly, in the vineyard. This grenache is a fine achievement at the price, boasting the varietal genetics of kirsch and tangy red fruits, all slung with alacrity across a beam of crunchy, pumice-tuned tannins and assuaging pomegranate acidity. A bit thin and green, perhaps. A gentle rasp... and snap, crackle, pop!

How's it taste?
2016 was a fantastic year in McLaren Vale, especially for Grenache. This wine shows the Grenache characters of both the Blewitt Springs and McLaren Flat of Bright lifted and intense floral aromatics in the blue and red fruit spectrum, the texture and richness from the lees ageing and oak maturation harnessed with fine sandy tannins that reflect the soil of the vineyard. Excellent food match with Sichuan Beef with Ginger- Soy Greens
How was it made?
McLaren Vale Grenache sourced from two vineyards across McLaren Flat and Blewitt Springs, matured in older oak to maintain fruit purity.
Who made it?
Before their first vintage in 2005, the Willunga 100 team explored the McLaren Vale vineyards and came across plots of 50-year-old Grenache vines. At this time, most of the wine produced from this fruit was destined for blending as there was little demand for top quality Grenache. Willunga 100 decided this had to change, so they made these vines their focus and gave them the attention they deserved. The Willunga 100 team haven’t looked back since. The soils in McLaren Vale are among the oldest in the world, estimated at over 500 million years. The resulting low vigour and old vines combine to produce low yields in the vineyard and stunning, concentrated fruit. Willunga 100 take their name from the historic ‘Hundred’ (administrative area of 100 square miles) of Willunga that was established in 1839 - only three years after the settlement of South Australia – and today marks the land from which much of their fruit is sourced. The tree featured on their bottle label is an old River Red Gum, which stands tall over the vineyards and was already over one hundred years of age when the first vines were planted in McLaren Vale in the 1840s.
