2017 Tyrrell's Vat 47 Chardonnay

"I always marvel at how Tyrrell's can deliver that combination of modern Chardonnay freshness, but with this lovely mid palate toast and richness. It's that plump but fresh combo that is impressive."

Hunter Valley Chardonnay at the pointy end. That's the Vat 47 brief, and this new '17 release continues the move to ever more delicacy.

Fresh, energetic, but still made to give real Chardonnay flavour, this is skilfully made contemporary white wine from a truly iconic maker.

2017 was a strong vintage for Vat 47, and it shows in the shape of this excellent Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

96 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontThis is right up there with the best recent vintages of Vat 47 for me (2009, 2013). I suspect it will be quite a thing with a few more years in bottle, and I’d suggest that the sweet spot is generally around five to ten years from vintage…. Beautiful. Wait a few years, mind you
93 Points - James SucklingThis is very deep and composed with layers of ripe-apple, cream, coconut and pie-crust character. Full body. Lightly velvety texture and a flavorful finish. Intense but in reserve. Gorgeous white.

How's it taste?

A fine example of modern Hunter Valley Chardonnay, medium bodied with slightly struck flint yeast character, a slight spiciness with grapefruit overtones. The palate is delicate, yet rich, round creamy fruit of great texture and mouthfeel persist, which ties in nicely with the soft French Oak balance and clean acid structure.

How was it made?

The fruit was handpicked before immediately being 100% basket pressed. The juice was cold settled for two days before fermentation was initiated in stainless steel tanks, then the fermenting juice was transferred to French Oak barriques (20% new). The wine stayed in these barriques until October before it was blended and coarse filtered into bottle.

Who made it?

Tyrrell's is an iconic Hunter Valley winery renowned for producing some of Australia’s greatest wines. Tyrrell's was established by English immigrant, Edward Tyrrell in 1858 at the foot of New South Wales’ striking Brokenback Range. Today, Tyrrell's is headed up by 4th generation winemaker, Bruce Tyrrell, with the 5th generation hot on his heels! Tyrrell's produces a broad array of wine varieties and styles, ranging from the inexpensive to the luxurious. They have championed the Semillon variety, with their flagship, of course, being the world-renowned Vat 1. They strive to create wines of individual character, flavour and integrity. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.
