2016 Head Red Barossa Valley Shiraz

2016 Head Red Barossa Valley Shiraz

Recommendations

Alex Head's most affordable Barossa red and what a bargain.

Here you're getting that classic Barossan style, with the trademark balance of decadent flavour and classy oak, the flavour denser than so many at this price.

Expert Reviews

92 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionA deeply coloured wine with plenty of savoury tannin backbone, but more than sufficient black fruits to put flesh on the bones, and finishes brightly.'
92 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontPlump, succulent and floral thing, with a brown spices, blackberries and assorted stonefruits. Medium to full bodied, a slight meatiness, but pretty much a silky and approachable Barossa Shiraz that slips down pretty nicely.'
90 Points - Huon HookeDeep red colour with a good tint of purple, the bouquet is herbal and plummy, fruit-driven, and quite elegant in its uncomplicated way. There is some chocolaty richness and fleshy texture which appeals. Very good value.'

How's it taste?

Dark berry fruit with some bitter dark chocolate oak, the palate medium bodied and leading towards a more savoury expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz.

How was it made?

HEAD RED is a barrel cull from Barossa vineyards including 'The Blonde', 'The Brunette' and ‘The Contrarian’ single vineyard wines. It allows a pre-view of the vintage quality to come and keeps the quality of the Single vineyard wines as high as possible. The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in predominantly older French hogsheads allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. It’s also a chance for me to play with the old adage, 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts'. Certainly the best value and most traditional wine style of the portfolio. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under stelvin capsule.

Who made it?

Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The ‘House Style’ is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during maturation. Head Wines quickly achieved a Halliday 5 Star Rating, Top 10 New Wineries to Watch and numerous Top 100 Wines. All vineyards are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible. Yields are low/controlled and grapes are hand-picked. The ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration.
