2016 John Duval Eligo Shiraz
Recommendations
Expert Reviews
Eligo is made from the best parcels of the vintage, fermented with submerged caps in small open fermenters, matured for 20 months in French hogsheads (50% new). The tannins and oak are built into the wine like a checkerboard table created by a master craftsman with decades of experience. Like John Duval.
Inky and bright. No shortage of colour. Initial oak varnish blows off with a few swirls. Black olives, purple plums and oak-spice - lots of moving parts. Imperious when sipped; intensely-cored with lashings of quality caramel oak. A beautiful young, confident shiraz. Built for the cellar
An outstanding colour with deep red hues. Dense and rich with subtle sweet oak tones. Hints of clove, liquorice, chocolate and plum liqueur. Remarkably deep, plush and dense, yet still lively and perfectly supple. With wines such as this, John Duval asserts himself as a master of shiraz. Full-bodied and luscious. An Australian classic
Duval’s eye is good in 2016 with a super rich array of plums, chocolate and blackberries on offer. Full-bodied palate and a strong, long and attractive core of fleshy, ripe fruit. Zesty kick on the finish.
Sumptuous and richly fruited, with a spicy, earthy bouquet of dark plums, prunes, raisins and blackberries backed by creamy, chocolatey oak. Underpinned by ferrous tannins, it delivers genuine length and power with a thick, slightly baked and bloody presence of dark plums, blackberries and roasting tray drippings. Time is needed to flesh out and soften.

How was it made?
Eligo represents the best of Duval's 2016 vintage and is sourced from some excellent Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa Valley (75%) and Eden Valley (25%) regions. Fermentation with submerged cap in small stainless steel fermenters. Some batches had up to 2 weeks on skins. 100% barrel matured for 20 months with 50% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre) and the balance 2 and 3 year old hogsheads.
Who made it?
John Duval is one of the world's best known winemakers, coming from a family that boasts four generations of South Australian vignerons. He has been saluted many times on the world stage, notably International Winemaker of the Year in 1989 and twice Red Winemaker of the Year in 1991 and 2000. After 28 years with Penfolds, including 16 years as Chief Winemaker, John has created these stunning wines under the John Duval label, which has now welcomed second generation Tim on board. Utilising old vine Barossa fruit, the wines express the terroir of the Barossa and the hand-crafted attention of John Duval.
