One of Australia's wine overachievers has done it again.

Following on from the sensational 95 point scoring 2017 vintage (and the trophy-winning 2016) comes this brand new 2018 Norfolk Rise Shiraz. And it is just fantastic.

Described by Campbell Mattinson in the Winefront recently as a 'lovely release' this is the perfect summer Shiraz. It's medium bodied, with moderate oak treatment to let the quality fruit intensity take centre stage and some white pepper and herbaceous notes.

As Campbell said 'think savoury, think light, think lovely' - a wine that showcases how good Mount Benson Shiraz can be, and the value for money is just ridiculous.

There's a reason why we've sold 2 shipping container's worth of Norfolk Rise Shiraz over the years, and the proof is in this wine!

Expert Reviews

91 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionEstate-grown, hand-picked 15 Mar-11 Apr, some whole berry, 12 days on skins, matured in French puncheons (5% new) for 7 months. Very good crimson-purple hue; the spicy, peppery, black cherry flavours verify the bouquet, although there's a nip in the air with the defiantly cool climate style.
90 Points - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontLovely release. Not stellar, but high value and excellent to drink. Spices aplenty - crushed dry leaves, stems and peppers - with cherried fruit washing through. It's light- to medium-weight, well textured, lively and balanced. Nutty tannin is beautifully well integrated. It's all very attractive. Think savoury, think light, think lovely.'
90 Points - Huon Hooke - The Real ReviewDeepish red/purple colour, with a bouquet of discreet pepper, spice, herbal and meaty charcuterie notes. The pepper suggests cool-climate. The palate is elegantly medium-bodied and very intense, the bright peppery fruit backed up by lively acidity. The tannins are in harmony.'

How's it taste?

Bright aromas of violets, pepper and ripe red fruits are followed by a luscious palate of dark fruit, spice and vanilla with well-integrated chocolaty oak supported by smooth tannins. Vibrant and juicy this wine is a bargain at the price and is ready to be enjoyed now.

How was it made?

Grapes were selected from our best Mount Benson Estate Shiraz vineyards. A long ripening season allows for a soft and silky tannin structure. The wine was matured in a mix of neutral and new French oak barriques prior to bottling, to allow integration of the great complexity of flavours.

Who made it?

Norfolk Rise is the best kept secret of South Australia, with the vineyard in Mount Benson only planted in 2000, and the first vintage off the estate bottled in 2002. The free draining limestone soil profiles and cool maritime breezes produce wines of exceptional quality and complexity, embodying the unique and magnificent terroir of the surrounding landscape.
