Sarah Linhart

"Bright jubey red fruit with musky, violet top notes. Very pleasant, easy drinking style."

Andrew Graham

"Classic varietal and regional style. Earth and red fruit."

Andrew Graham

Hunter Valley writ large. That's the gist of this savoury and deliciously 'Huntery' Shiraz, which has so much character and heart, yet delivered in an utterly classical, mid weight style.

A true regional red.

Expert Reviews

96 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionA brother to the '18 Hunter Valley Semillon, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, pressed to large-format used casks. This is a rich yet tightly managed wine, placing all the emphasis on fruit, precisely that which should be done, especially in a year such as this. If you buy it now - and you should - put not less than 50% in the cellar, and have a glass on me, recalling it only cost $25. Gold medal Hunter Valley Wine Show.
92 Points - Joe Czerwinski - Wine AdvocateThe Tyrrell family was excited about its 2014s when I visited there earlier this year, and this suggests their ebullience is well founded. The aromas are fresh and floral, loaded with cherry-berry fruit and a hint of cracked pepper, while on the palate, the wine is medium bodied and supple, with a long, peppery, silky finish.

How's it taste?

A classic medium-bodied Hunter style. Deceptively ‘rich’ with a savoury pepper and charcuterie flavour mixed in good proportions with ripe red and black berry fruits. Solid colour and intensity start the wine off in the right direction, while the palate shows up-front fruit sweetness with our hallmark savoury crunchy tannins and fresh moreish finish. Vintage conditions resulted in a combination of really ripe fruit flavours balanced by the leaner savoury ones, making this wine not only very drinkable but also adding some intrigue.

How was it made?

The ‘baby brother’ to their famous Vat 9 Shiraz.

Sourced from a small selection of our favourite shiraz blocks, the grapes were both hand and machine picked before fermentation in the traditional open top vats. The wine was then matured in older, large format French oak casks. These 2,700 litre casks highlight the fruit purity whilst making sure that oak isn’t the dominant character.

Who made it?

Tyrrell's is an iconic Hunter Valley winery renowned for producing some of Australia’s greatest wines. Tyrrell's was established by English immigrant, Edward Tyrrell in 1858 at the foot of New South Wales’ striking Brokenback Range. Today, Tyrrell's is headed up by 4th generation winemaker, Bruce Tyrrell, with the 5th generation hot on his heels! Tyrrell's produces a broad array of wine varieties and styles, ranging from the inexpensive to the luxurious. They have championed the Semillon variety, with their flagship, of course, being the world-renowned Vat 1. They strive to create wines of individual character, flavour and integrity. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.
