From 5-star-rated Barossa winemaker Alex Head, this 2017 Head Cellar Reserve Shiraz is exactly what Barossa Shiraz is all about. The cool 2017 vintage has injected a little more spice into that classic plummy richness, making for a wine of both flavour and balance.
Described by wine critic Gary Walsh as 'dark and spicy' with 'attractive Barossa Shiraz flavour, delivered with a bit of polish and finesse' this is packed with charisma and flavour. The sort of wine you'd imagine from a three time Young Gun of Wine Finalist.

Fruit expressive and attractively fragrant, the wine shows sweet cherry, raspberry, vanilla and mixed spice aromas on the nose, leading to a juicy palate that is smooth and supple. It is immediately appealing with plenty of tasty flavours. At its best: now to 2024'
Dark and spicy, a bit of earth, subtle floral notes. Medium bodied, gently earth, supple and soft, attractive Barossa Shiraz flavor, delivered with a bit of polish and finesse. Hard to imagine anyone being unhappy with this.'
Very deep, bright purple/red colour; the bouquet minty and gumleafy, with lifted aromatic notes. The wine is medium to full-bodied and sinewy, with plenty of firm tannin and good length. There is a menthol, almost linament-like flavour and aroma, probably derived from eucalyptol. It's a good wine and very keen value.'
Head Wines are in many ways a unique expression of Barossa Valley. While still showing the region's renowned generosity of fruit, they also display a little European-inspired subtlety, in part from winemaking but also the use of fruit from a wide range of soils and clones. Head chooses his vineyards in part based on the growers; he prizes intelligent professionals who will allow him to have some input in the vineyard while also having a strong interest in the final product."

How's it taste?
Intense aromas of blueberry and currants with hints of rosemary, sage, menthol and fennel. The palate explodes with bright forest berry fruit, supported by sweet, moreish tannins that saturates the mouth. Lovely length of fruit and flavours this is a fantastic wine that screams value for money. Ready to drink right now.
How was it made?
Shiraz grapes from the Barossa Valley, open fermented and matured in older French oak barrels. The cool 2017 vintage has injected a little more spice into that classic plummy richness, making for a wine of both flavour and balance.
Who made it?
Head Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. The ‘House Style’ is one of elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by slow-winemaking and careful, gentle attention during maturation. Head Wines quickly achieved a Halliday 5 Star Rating, Top 10 New Wineries to Watch and numerous Top 100 Wines. All vineyards are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible. Yields are low/controlled and grapes are hand-picked. The ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration.
