2015 Stella Bella Suckfizzle Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

2015 Stella Bella Suckfizzle Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

Recommendations

One of the more complex white wines to come out of Margaret River, this satisfying riff on the classic regional blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon is a star.

As Ned points out in his review, this is equal to the great Bordeaux blanc styles of Graves, with a beautiful contrast between lightly herbal notes and then a palate that sings a textural song.

Magnificent white wine.

Expert Reviews

97 Points - DecanterVery aromatic rich toasty nose, with lots of tomato leaf and some fresh asparagus with hints of acacia honey and green apricot, the palate has heaps of greengage and pineapple fruit with baked apple hints, great depth weight and length.'
97 Points - Ned Goodwin - Halliday's Wine Companion'Always a regional tour de force, this has high quality Graves written all over it; not merely fermented in French oak (60% new), but aged as well (40% new) for 14 months, with incremental batonnage to amplify the compelling textural detail. A citrus choir with the focus on lemon: lemon grass, lemon curd and ripe Meyer, all soaring along a balancing beam of vanilla cream oak. This is world class, transcending the general malaise when it comes to these oft-abused varieties.'
95 Points - Huon HookeNutty oak and low-level sulfides interact with herbal and tropical fruit aromas. A pungent style to sniff, the palate more restrained and savoury with a clean, dry finish and good length. An arresting style of wine, concentrated and powerful. (61% sauvignon blanc, 39% semillon. 60% new oak).'
93 Points - Mike Bennie - The Wine FrontSort of two thirds sauvignon blanc. Lighter on the phenolics and oak than in past releases. Still sees a good dash of oak though. Strong herbal notes launch the wine, green pea, beans, asparagus, hints of lemon, grapefruit. Distinct. Palate is tight, drives with brisk acidity and yet there are many layers to flavour. Slight chewiness to texture, finishes with faint yeasty, savoury note. Impressive wine.'

How's it taste?

Lemon and dill on the nose, the lemony palate fleshed out with background vanilla bean oak before a long dry finish.

How was it made?

Matured in 60% new French oak for 14 months, the wine built for further bottle ageing.

Who made it?

Stella Bella Wines evolved from the fusion of two passionate minds, Stuart Pym and Janice McDonald. They had a strong belief in the unique and expressive terroir of the Margaret River region, and it was this belief that carried them on their journey to create Stella Bella Wines. Back in 1996, Stuart and Janice took over the 'Suckfizzle' Vineyard, believing that its distinctive location would produce unique wines. They weren't wrong, and in 1998 the first vintage of Suckfizzle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon was released. The Stella Bella name was launched in the following yers, as their portfolio of wines grew. They added an estate range, an entry-level range under the label Skuttlebutt, and a premium range labelled, Serie Luminosa. In 2013, Stuart handed over the reins as Chief Winemaker to Luke Joliffe. Today, the Stella Bella team work with a variety of vineyards dotted throughout the Margaret River - Darch, Isca, Forest Grove, Karridale and, of course, Suckfizzle. Each site encapsulates a different aspect and terroir of the Margaret River, allowing Luke and his team to create harmonious blends across different vineyards, or to isolate single vineyard expressions and showcase the individual vineyard characteristics.
