2018 Pure Clare Watervale Riesling

"You don’t often get this level of intensity of flavour for under $15. It’s a beautiful wine from one of Riesling’s top subregions. Serious wine, silly price."

Sam Taylor

"Racy, juicy Riesling."

Sam Taylor

Here's an instant classic Australian Riesling. Made by legendary Australian winemaker - and the father of modern Aussie dry Riesling - John Vickery, alongside equally clever star winemaker Phil Lehmann, this is a beautiful wine.

Crafted from a single vineyard in Watervale - aka the spiritual home of Clare Valley Riesling - this has that ultimate combination of limey fruit, citrussy acidity and an ultra long fresh finish.

Here's what legendary Seppelt winemaker and wine show judge Ian McKenzie had to say: '(This) 2018 Riesling is excellent! Seriously good example of what Watervale can produce. Beautiful fragrant ripe fruit with some depth and texture but in no way big or coarse. Lovely acidity gives it length and balance'.

Expert Reviews

94 Points - Sam Kim - Wine OrbitThis is clear for what it is. From the Watervale district, this finely scented riesling shows lemon peel, lime sorbet, fresh apple and white floral characters on the nose, leading to vibrant palate that is juicy and bright. The wine offers elegant fruit intensity backed by fine texture and linear mouthfeel, finishing persistent and delightful. At its best: 2020 to 2028.

How's it taste?

Intensely varietal with fragrant aromas of ripe lime and orange blossom which appear to jump from the glass. The palate is rich and ripe with an exceptional depth of flavour supported by lively acidity which contributes to the overall balance and length.

How was it made?

A light fresh palate and limey, mineral acidity this is the perfect drink to pair with a green mango salad. The secret with the Pure Clare Single Vineyard Riesling is just about freshness, packing a limey, ultra-crisp personality that is going to win hearts and minds all over the country. A deliciously dry, intensely flavoured Watervale Clare Valley Riesling in its best form.

Who made it?

Pure Clare is a label that comes from the brilliant winemaking team at Vickery Wines. Specialising in the Clare Valley staples, Riesling and Shiraz, Pure Clare aims to emphasise the best aspects of the region and terroir through vibrant and varietally specific wines.
