Well, this is an extraordinary deal - a prime-aged, 94 point scoring, 2009 Mount Langi Ghiran Riesling, direct from the winery cellar, at a sensational price.
And it all came about thanks to one tiny labelling error...
You see, when bottling this 2009 Mount Langi Cliff Edge Riesling the winemakers made one crucial mistake - they forgot to put the 'standard drinks' on the label.
The wine then sat languishing in the winery cellar in no-mans land, needing a whole relabel for the wine to be sold to the public. Ugh.
Just recently we were chatting to a Mount Langi sales rep who mentioned that there was a pallet of this in the cellar, and said we could have it for a discount (if we could work out how to sell it).
After trying the wine, we jumped. It's a premium aged Riesling, from one of Western Victoria's best makers, at a fantastic price!
The only catch? We can only sell this wine in straight six packs, as a special label has been stuck on the outside of the box with standard drinks. That's it.

So beautifully balanced in its mouthfeel, it's easy to overlook the inherent complexity; apple, lime, pear and mineral all take turns to strut their stuff, the finish long and complete. Published August 2010
It’s two years old now and it’s probably having a little nap; I have a feeling this would have been more impressive 12 months ago, and will likely be more impressive again in another two or three years from now. That said, it’s still pretty and delicious. It’s all lime and apple and orange blossoms and it sings with scintillating acidity. Length is not an issue. A slight honeycomb sweetness has just entered the fray. Will be tops with a bit more time under its belt. 92+ Points.
The 2009 Cliff Edge Riesling offers a good intensity of lemongrass, grapefruit juice and lime leaf aromas with hints of straw and lanolin. Dry and light bodied with very crisp acidity, it presents plenty of zesty, citrus fruit flavor and a long tangy finish.
Very light yellow, shy, slightly malty aroma, some solids in the juice? A delicate, light-bodied wine with subtle flavour, a trace of residual sugar and delicate structure. Unusual style: not typical Aussie. Vanilla malt among the flavours.

How's it taste?
So fresh for a '09 Riesling, crisp citrus like flavours blend with aged honey/kerosine complex notes. A real treat.
How was it made?
The cool vineyards of Western Victoria have delivered a Riesling with terrific natural acidity and bright floral aromas. Grown on a a variety of soils, including ancient granite and weathered sandstone, this wine is complex and fine, showing green apple and pear fruits.
Who made it?
With imposing, rugged cliff faces casting shadows across ancient vine plantings, Mount Langi Ghiran is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Great Dividing Range in the Grampians region of Victoria. The Mount Langi Ghiran – Aboriginal for home of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo – vineyard is one of the most isolated and unique sites in Australian viticulture.

I love experimenting with wines and encourage our Wine Collective members to try something different all the time. It’s amazing how the same grape variety from 2 different regions made by 2 different wine makers can taste so different. Some wines can be enjoyed on their own while others are better with food. If we all liked the same thing we’d be pretty boring.
