"Off dry but it doesn't taste. Sleek and long with just a little sweetness. Some bottle age fullness on the palate too. Long finish."

Tunkalilla is Brian Croser's Oregon project, first setup in 2002 soon after he sold out of Petaluma. An old Christmas tree farm, it lies in prime grapegrowing country - the famous Christom winery is next door, where Brian has made the wines. Interestingly this site was specifically setup for Riesling, and like anything with that sort of focus the results are impressive.

This 2012 is quite a find though. Now well and truly a back vintage, we were lucky to be in the right place at the right time to land some, and it's looking delicious. It's your chance to snare a great bottle-aged off-dry Riesling with impeccable pedigree.

Expert Reviews

92 Points - Wine SpectatorLight and sleek, with minerally acidity that runs delicately through relatively fleshy, lightly sweet pear, grapefruit and cream flavors, finishing with delicacy. Drink now through 2020.

How's it taste?

A fine, classy off-dry Riesling with beautiful bottle-aged toasty edges over a core of limey fruit intensity and sprightly acidity, the maturity giving more softness and weight to what is otherwise a very tight and fresh style with a long finish

How was it made?

The first five vintages at Tunkalilla Vineyard (2008-2012) have all been cooler than average although 2012 was the second warmest of the five after the 2009 vintage. The very dry and moderately warm vintage combined with the 7- year vine age has produced a wine with strong, ripe Riesling flavours. Unusually, the acid was lower than the previous vintages, probably because of the high level of sunlight hours of the 2012 vintage.

The 11.4 gm/L of residual sugar combined with the ripe flavours, balances the modest 8 gm/L of acid achieving a dry finish.
The ripe Riesling aromatics are of orange blossom, passion fruit and mango and while the flavour is ripe and intense it is also refined. 2012 Tunkalilla Vineyard Riesling is another slightly surprising expression of this unique terroir.

Who made it?

Tunkalilla Vineyard is a tiny specialist Riesling vineyard perched on the southern facing end escarpment of the Eola Hills in the Willamette Valley overlooking Salem, the capital of Oregon. In 2005, Brian and Ann Croser planted 3 acres of Riesling on the then 50-acre Christmas tree farm that has since been cleared for further plantings of Riesling and Pinot Noir. Tunkalilla Vineyard is on the western boundary of Cristom winery’s distinguished Pinot Noir vineyard sites and a strong relationship between the Croser family and the Gerrie family of Cristom has developed allowing Brian and Ann to make their initial Tunkalilla Vineyard Rieslings at the Cristom winery Brian and Ann chose to name their Oregon vineyard Tunkalilla Vineyard after the beach adjacent to the farms on the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia where they grow prime lamb (Maylands Farm lamb) and Tapanappa Foggy Hill Pinot Noir.
