"Nutty, leesy, burnt match. Silky texture, lemony and a nice weight."

"Lime and flint. Loads of oyster shell minerality - from one of the best Semillon producers in the country"
Felix Gentle
From one of Australia’s most iconic family-owned wineries. The 1858 Semillon is the little brother to the iconic Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon.
Like the Vat 1, the 1858 comes from a selection of some of Tyrrell’s top Semillon vineyards in the Hunter Valley, with an average vine age of 40 years.
A delicious drink now, and with the potential to age for up to a decade, this is a Hunter bargain.
Expert Reviews
Expressing varietal purity and regional typicity, this splendid offering shows lemon peel, lime cordial and dried grass notes on the nose, leading to a concentrated yet restrained palate that is subtle, fine and lingering. It is sleek and sharp with a terrific structure for graceful development. At its best: 2020 to 2028.

How's it taste?
Green apple and citrus on the nose with a palate of slightly tart green apples and then lots of acidity, with a structure to ensure ageing
How was it made?
Headed up by Bruce Tyrrell, the winery is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the renowned Vat 1 Semillon. Sourced from a small selection of Tyrrell’s favourite Semillon blocks, the grapes were both hand and machine picked before gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent a few months on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel.
Who made it?
Tyrrell's is an iconic Hunter Valley winery renowned for producing some of Australia’s greatest wines. Tyrrell's was established by English immigrant, Edward Tyrrell in 1858 at the foot of New South Wales’ striking Brokenback Range. Today, Tyrrell's is headed up by 4th generation winemaker, Bruce Tyrrell, with the 5th generation hot on his heels! Tyrrell's produces a broad array of wine varieties and styles, ranging from the inexpensive to the luxurious. They have championed the Semillon variety, with their flagship, of course, being the world-renowned Vat 1. They strive to create wines of individual character, flavour and integrity. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.

A really great wine deal must must be accompanied by great value. There is nothing better than getting an incredible bottle of wine for a fraction of what similar quality wines sell for. My recommendations gives you the very best "Value for money" wines at different pricepoints.
